Microsoft Teams Phone Agent goes GA with metered billing
Microsoft's AI receptionist is now generally available with usage-based pricing. Here is what that means if you are choosing a phone system this quarter.

Microsoft moved Teams Phone Agent to general availability on September 30, 2026. The AI receptionist answers calls, books appointments from calendars, transfers with AI-written notes, and works in 60+ languages. It sits in front of call queues and pulls answers from files and knowledge bases.
The bigger change is how you pay for it. Teams Phone Agent runs on Copilot Credits, billed by call duration and which features the call invoked. This is Microsoft's first metered charge on a phone line.
Dialpad announced the same week that it extended full AI feature parity to eight new languages: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. International teams now get the same real-time intelligence and coaching as English-speaking ones, with transcription, AI summaries and scorecards included. Dialpad also added AI Recaps for chat and SMS and the ability to text 50 customers at once.
If you are choosing a phone system this quarter, here is what these announcements change.
What Teams Phone Agent needs before it answers a call
You need three things before Teams Phone Agent can pick up: Teams Phone, a resource account, and a spending policy. The spending policy must be set first. Without it, nothing rings. That means you need someone with admin access to set billing limits before the AI agent goes live.
Teams Phone Agent can be extended through Unify connectivity, so it can reach outside the Teams environment when it needs to transfer or pull data.
How usage-based billing changes the math
Every other business phone platform charges per user per month. You pay for 50 seats, you get 50 seats. Teams Phone works that way too, until you add the AI agent.
Copilot Credits are Microsoft's metered model. You are billed by how long each call lasts and which capabilities the agent used during the call. A short question answered from a file costs less than a 10-minute conversation that books three appointments and transfers twice.
That makes budgeting harder. You cannot multiply seats by price and know your bill. You have to estimate call volume, average duration, and feature use. If call volume spikes, so does the bill.
For a business that gets consistent call volume, the metered model might cost less than paying for a full-time receptionist seat. For a business with unpredictable spikes, it adds risk.
What this means if you are already on Teams Phone
If your company already uses Microsoft 365 and Teams Phone, adding the AI agent is one more line item under the same vendor. IT does not need to learn a new admin portal or onboard a second platform. You stay inside the Microsoft ecosystem.
The tradeoff is the metered billing and the spending policy requirement. You need to watch usage the way you would watch Azure compute costs, not the way you ignore a flat monthly phone bill.
What this means if you are choosing between platforms
If you are comparing Microsoft Teams Phone, Dialpad, RingCentral, and others, the question is whether metered AI features or bundled AI features fit your business better.
Dialpad includes AI transcription, real-time coaching, summaries and scorecards in every seat, now across nine languages. You pay per user per month. The bill does not change if someone talks for two minutes or twenty.
Five9 is betting on what new CEO Amit Mathradas calls "Humantic CX", platforms that combine AI and human work. Mathradas started February 2, 2026, and half the executive team is new. The company is signaling a bigger focus on openness and integration.
RingCentral has its own AI features bundled into its plans. The difference between platforms is no longer whether they have AI. It is how they price it, how many languages it covers, and whether it works with the rest of your stack.
Where Empire fits
We are a tier-three partner for every major platform. That means we sell Microsoft Teams Phone, Dialpad, RingCentral, Five9 and the rest at pricing that is cheaper than buying direct. You get the same platform, better pricing, and a team that handles setup, porting and support.
We do not push one over the other. We ask what you need, what you already use, and how your team works. Then we quote the platforms that fit and let you pick.
If you are already on one platform and wondering whether to add AI features or switch, we can model both. If you are starting fresh, we can compare all of them side by side.
FAQ
Does Teams Phone Agent replace a live receptionist? It can handle after-hours calls, answer common questions, and book appointments. For complex situations or callers who ask for a person, it transfers. Whether it replaces a receptionist depends on your call volume and how often calls need judgment.
Can I use Teams Phone Agent if I'm not on Microsoft 365? No. You need Teams Phone, which requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. If you are not already in the Microsoft ecosystem, other platforms with bundled AI might be simpler.
How do I compare metered AI costs to per-seat AI costs? Estimate your monthly call volume, average call length, and how often the AI will need to use advanced features like booking or transferring. Then compare that metered estimate to the per-seat cost of a platform that bundles AI. We can model both for you.
