Gartner's 2024 Magic Quadrants for UCaaS and CCaaS: what changed for RingCentral, Dialpad, Microsoft Teams, NICE and Five9

Gartner released its 2024 Magic Quadrants for Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) and Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) in October 2024. Both reports show significant movements that matter if you are comparing phone systems or contact center platforms right now.

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner's annual ranking of vendors by ability to execute and completeness of vision. Leaders sit in the top right quadrant: strong product, strong roadmap, strong market presence. Challengers execute well but lack vision. Visionaries have ideas but struggle to deliver at scale. Niche Players serve specific segments. Most enterprise buyers and consultants use the reports as a starting point when shortlisting platforms.

This year's UCaaS and CCaaS reports landed within days of each other. Here is what changed and what it means for your decision.

UCaaS: Microsoft still leads, Cisco advances past RingCentral and Zoom

Microsoft held the top spot in the 2024 UCaaS Magic Quadrant. Teams Phone remains the default choice for organizations already running Microsoft 365, especially those over 1,000 users. The platform's strength is integration: calendar, chat, files and calls in one interface.

The bigger story is Cisco's rise. Webex moved ahead of both RingCentral and Zoom in the Leaders quadrant, driven by AI features. Cisco added real-time transcription, AI-generated meeting summaries and an assistant that answers questions during calls. For enterprises that want AI built into the platform rather than bolted on later, Webex is now ahead.

RingCentral was named a Leader for the tenth consecutive year. The platform remains the strongest choice for mid-market companies that need a complete UCaaS and CCaaS bundle without Microsoft or Google as the underlying stack. RingCentral's multi-channel contact center, integrations with Salesforce and Zendesk, and API flexibility keep it in the Leaders quadrant. If you want one vendor for phones and contact center and you are not locked into Microsoft, RingCentral is still the safest pick.

Zoom was named a Leader for the fifth consecutive year. Zoom Phone's advantage is simplicity: the interface everyone already knows from video calls, plus strong international coverage. Zoom works well for distributed teams that run meetings on Zoom and want calling added to the same app. The platform's weakness remains limited CCaaS features compared to RingCentral and 8x8.

8x8 stayed in the Leaders quadrant. Gartner noted 8x8's strength in bundling UCaaS and CCaaS for contact centers under 300 agents. The platform's analytics and workforce management tools are stronger than RingCentral's at the low end. If you need both phones and a contact center and you have fewer than 300 agents, 8x8 often costs less than RingCentral with better reporting.

Dialpad moved from Visionaries to Niche Players. Dialpad's AI features, real-time transcription and post-call summaries, were ahead of competitors two years ago. This year Cisco, Microsoft and RingCentral all caught up or passed Dialpad on AI, and Dialpad's market execution did not keep pace. The platform still works well for small teams that want AI-first calling, but the Niche Players placement signals weaker support, fewer integrations and a smaller install base than the Leaders.

Google remained the only Challenger, strong on execution but narrow in vision.

CCaaS: NICE and Five9 lead

NICE CXone was named a Leader in the 2024 CCaaS Magic Quadrant for the tenth consecutive year. Gartner placed NICE furthest to the right on the Completeness of Vision axis. The platform leads on workforce management, quality management, AI and omnichannel routing. If you run a contact center over 500 agents, NICE is the strongest choice for analytics, compliance recording and supervisor tools. The platform's weakness is complexity: it takes longer to configure and requires more training than Five9.

Five9 was also named a Leader. Five9's strength is ease of use and fast deployment. The platform works well for contact centers between 50 and 1,000 agents that want strong AI, good CRM integrations and a simpler interface than NICE. Five9's practical AI features include agent assist, call summarization and sentiment analysis that work out of the box.

What the movements mean when comparing platforms

If you are comparing UCaaS platforms right now:

  • Pick Microsoft Teams Phone if you already run Microsoft 365 and want the simplest path.
  • Pick RingCentral if you want one vendor for phones and contact center, strong integrations and a proven platform.
  • Pick Cisco Webex if AI features matter more than anything else.
  • Pick Zoom Phone if your team already lives in Zoom and you want calling added with no learning curve.
  • Pick 8x8 if you need bundled phones and contact center under 300 agents with strong analytics.
  • Dialpad still works for small teams that want AI transcription, but the Niche Players placement means fewer features and integrations than the Leaders.

Compare platforms side by side: RingCentral vs Dialpad, RingCentral vs 8x8, RingCentral vs Zoom.

If you are comparing CCaaS platforms, pick NICE CXone for large, complex contact centers that need the strongest analytics and compliance tools. Pick Five9 for mid-market contact centers that want easier setup and strong AI without the complexity.

FAQ

What is the Gartner Magic Quadrant?

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner's annual ranking of vendors in a category by ability to execute and completeness of vision. Leaders sit in the top right: strong product, strong roadmap, strong market share. Most enterprise buyers use the report as a starting shortlist.

Does being a Leader mean a platform is the best choice for my business?

No. A Leader placement means strong execution and vision across a broad market. The best platform for your business depends on your size, integrations, whether you need contact center features and what you already run. A Niche Player may fit better than a Leader if your needs match what they do well.
